Why You Should Hold Onto the Lord’s Truth

Posted on January 15, 2018 By In Encouragement , Religion With no comments

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31-32

Recently, the old TV Game Show, To Tell The Truth, was revived. More than likely you’ve seen it. Three mystery people represent themselves as having the same unique story or identity. It’s up to the panel of judges to determine which of the three are telling the truth. The panel asks questions in an effort to determine who is lying and who is telling the truth. Ultimately, the single truthful individual is revealed when the moderator says, “Will the real (name) please stand up!”

Often times, the panel guesses wrong. Just as in life, the discernment of truth is difficult.

When my boys were little they used to play their own version of To Tell the Truth. Something would get broken and both would deny having any knowledge of what caused an object to jump from a secure place in a cabinet to a mangled mess on the floor. It was up to me and my wife to determine who told the truth. Sometimes we got it right and in some cases the mystery went unsolved.

Lies are often hard to distinguish from truth and can actually appear more attractive than truth. Have you ever bought one of those “As Only Seen On TV” offers. The first lie is that the product is only sold on TV. (I found it at Walgreens.) The second lie is revealed when you try to get the product to do all as shown on TV. “If it appears too good to be true…it probably it is.”

Sometimes we buy into things because we so desperately want them to be true. How many times have we bought into the campaign promises of politicians? What they said was not what they did once we elected them. You’ve probably heard this old joke. “How can you tell when a politician is lying? His lips are moving?”

Arriving at truth takes on greater significance as we seek to make important decisions that affect the quality and future of our lives. In regard to things spiritual, we must place our trust in something or somebody.

Even refusal to trust in a higher power is a decision based on perceived truth. The individual who makes such a choice has placed his trust in himself.

The Lord’s Truth is Completely Reliable

Jesus says that He is “the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6)  He also said He is the only way and that no one comes to the Father accept through Him. Jesus is “the truth” and the disseminator of reliable “truth.”

In today’s selected scripture we read, “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” Herein is an important key to discerning spiritual truth. If you hold to my teaching…then you will know the truth.”

Jesus is your anchor for truth. When you “hold to” His teaching you can always be confident you are placing your trust in the real truth. When you seek to combine the teachings of Jesus with anyone or anything other than Him, you are steering away from the truth and headed for a spiritual shipwreck.

Only the Lord’s Truth Will Do

Jesus promises “you will know the truth.” The Lord’s truth is not some mystical fog floating above your head with nothing concrete upon which you can take hold. You can know the Lord’s truth by hanging on to His every word. Not only does He promise that you will “know the truth” but also that “the truth will set you free.” The knowledge of God’s truth through Jesus Christ produces freedom from bondage to this evil world.

Measure all spiritual messages and instruction by the word of God. As a Christian you have been given the Holy Spirit to enable you to discern spiritual truth. Don’t make the mistake of cluttering your mind with non-biblical nonsense. “Hold to” the truth only found in Jesus.
