Where to Find Peace for All of Life’s Storms

Posted on November 16, 2017 By In Encouragement , Religion With no comments

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

2 Thessalonians 3:16

Weather reporting is big business. Local TV stations pay out big bucks for high-tech gadgets to improve the accuracy of their predictions.

We have weather apps for our phones. They enable us to watch for  changing weather patterns and approaching storms.

Back in the day, TV weather reporters used a map and crayons for their forecasts. We’ve come a long way since their drawings of stickmen with umbrellas.

My grandparents relied on the Farmer’s Almanac to predict the weather. The editors of the annual publication use a secret formula for their prognostications, developed in 1792. Yes, I hear you. Strange. But Charlie and Mable Polk swore by it.

And then there was my mother’s method. When I broke my leg as a child, she told me that after it healed, it would be useful for predicting the weather. Really?

Point is, with all the methods we use to predict storms, we can’t stop them from coming. At best, our methods help us to prepare for approaching storms.

When you gave your life to Christ, you received the ultimate storm survival kit. You have been given all you need for all of life’s chaotic circumstances.

Let’s review our focus text from 2 Thessalonians 3:16. “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.”

We belong to the Lord of peace. Because of that relationship we can have peace at all times in every way.

That means that in every difficult and frightening situation you face, you can have peace. Why? Because the Lord is with you.

My cat is frightened by loud noises. Thunder. The blender. The garbage disposal. The vacuum cleaner. My neighbor’s pickup truck on steroids. Dusty responds to his fear by taking refuge in his master’s lap.

The Lord is our shelter and refuge from the storm where we will find peace at all times in every way.

Jesus’ disciples were stunned by His announcement He planned to leave them. They had big earthly plans for their Lord. He would be king, and they would serve in His kingdom. Then Jesus declared that one from among them would betray Him. Another, Peter, would deny Him. All of this was too much. So troubling. It was in this context that Jesus spoke these words:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

Life doesn’t always turn out the way we planned. But when we trust Christ, life will turn out according to His plan. And that’s where we find peace. The Lord has everything under control. “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Recently, I learned two of my old friends were diagnosed with cancer. I know they are people of faith. They will endure this storm like all the others, in the shelter of the loving arms of Christ.

How often I am reminded of the truth of Philippians 4:7. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  It’s that peaceful feeling you get in the midst of the storm you can’t explain. You know that you know that you know — Jesus has everything under control. Something else I want you to notice about that verse. It doesn’t say MAYBE He will guard your heart and mind with his peace. Philippians 4:7 says He WILL.

Is there a storm creating chaos in your life today? Then through prayer and in faith, find rest and confidence in the peace of the Lord. Remember, His peace is for all times and in every way.

Do you recall the incident in Jesus’ earthly ministry when He calmed the storm? His disciples feared for their lives. While they were fretting, Jesus slept calmly in the boat. Then they awakened Him, and Jesus spoke to the storm.

Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. Mark 4:39 NKJV

May His peace prevail in your life today and every day.
