…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” That old saying has plenty of applications, but when it comes to our country and our world, it’s way off base. Our land is broken and in desperate need of repair. And only God can heal our land.
I’m not referring to the infrastructure, although as I understand it, there’s plenty that needs to be restored and upgraded. My concern is the ideological divide and the turning away from God.
A frequently used word these days is “narrative.” It simply means a spoken or written account of connected events. It has become something more. Ideologues, political pundits, news media, and subversive organizations advance their agenda by creating a narrative. The narrative doesn’t have to be truthful, just representative of the message or cause. It is by design manipulative and a means of shaping public opinion.
Narrative takes a simple idea and builds a plausible story by stringing together unproven facts and innuendo. Narrative seeks to devour competing messages. In regard to the message of Christ and the church, the narrative paints Christians as insensitive, bigoted, narrow-minded, judgmental, out of touch with the times, and hate-mongers. You and I know that’s not true, but many people believe that about us.
I’ve always known there was evil in man’s heart, but nothing like we’re seeing today on social media and in the news. The depravity of man has never been more evident.
Does this sound familiar?
…in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good… 2 Timothy 3:1-3
Those words were written about 2,000 years ago, but they sound like they were written today. So does that mean we can’t turn back the tide? Are we to sit back, do nothing, and wait for the inevitable end?
It’s Not Too Late for God to Heal Our Land
Well, to be sure, these are the end times. The Lord’s return is near, but how near no one knows. For centuries, Bible scholars and preachers have declared the last days are upon us.
What is important is not when the end will come, but that we are ready? And while we are here, we should take advantage of the power and blessings available to us from Almighty God to make our world a better place.
Yes, our nation is troubled, divided, and drifting away from God. But hope remains. Our focus text declares, “If my people…” That’s us. The redeemed in Christ. Reversing the trend, countering the false narrative, and turning our nation back to God starts with us. If we pray and turn from our wicked ways, God will heal our land.
Notice that this scripture does not call on everyone to turn from their wicked ways. The charge is to God’s children. We must get our spiritual act together.
God has brought great revivals before, and He will do it again if we will do our part.
Do you ever get the feeling that people have been blinded to the truth? Do you wonder how they could possibly think and believe as they do? And then you observe there is nothing you can say or do to change their minds.
Truth is, they ARE blind. They have believed the false narrative, struck stupid by the evil one’s destructive propaganda. However, God-sent revival can melt cold hearts.
The Holy Spirit can prick their hearts, make them aware of their sin guilt, and bring them to their knees.
In 1734, the town of Northampton, Massachusetts experienced a miraculous revival. In six months, three hundred people in a town of eleven hundred gave their lives to Christ. That movement of the Spirit swept to another one hundred towns accomplishing similar results.
Those who keep records of such things report at least three Great Awakenings in American history, possibly four. Like I said. God did it before. He can do it again. But it starts with us…
