How to Attain Everything You Need for Life and Godliness

How to Attain Everything You Need for Life and Godliness

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

2 Peter 1:3

Did you ever buy a kit that promised to include “everything you need?” Everything you need to start your own business. Everything you need to waterproof your basement. Or even everything you need to paint like a pro. You get the picture. But what is it that we soon find out about these “everything you need” offers? There is still a substantial learning curve with a lot of trial and error, the work is far from easy, and it takes longer to complete the project than expected.

I once did considerable research on what it would take to remodel the stairs in my home. I even bought a book called Everything You Need to Know about Carpentry. Ultimately I visited the local Home Depot store and purchased “everything I needed” to complete the project. What started out to be a weekend project turned into a 3 month ordeal. Fortunately, I was at work the day the professional showed up to give my wife an estimate for undoing the mess that I had created. Apparently he was quite amused at my fiasco. It took him less than two days to do what I couldn’t do in three months.

In today’s focus scripture we encounter an “everything you need” offer from God. When you received God’s gift of eternal life upon believing in Jesus you were given everything needed “for life and godliness.” In verse 4 Peter tells us that our “everything” gift enables us to “participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” No doubt God has equipped us with an extraordinary ability. Although each one of us has been given all we need for spiritual maturity, life teaches us that even God’s “everything you need” promise is not an instantaneous fix for our propensity to sin. If it was, we would all be spiritually mature.

You may be asking, “If God has given me everything I need for life and godliness,” why am I still struggling with sin? Why am I not spiritually mature?

Did you ever marvel at the extraordinary abilities of a musician or athlete? How did they get to be so good at what they do? Certainly discipline and hard work were involved, but that was only part of their success.

I have been a musician and even played several sports but I know that, no matter how hard I worked, I could never have been as good as the top professionals in their respective fields. God has blessed them with extraordinary talent, an aptitude for outstanding performance above and beyond the norm of the human experience.

God-given talent and aptitude still must be refined and developed to attain its maximum potential. For that to happen there must be commitment, discipline, training, and hard work. God has already bestowed upon us “everything we need for life and godliness.” Spiritual maturity is ours to be had, but it will only come “through our knowledge of him.” We grow in this knowledge as we remain committed to obedience to God, disciplined in application of biblical principles to daily living, submitted to God’s life training in the School of Hard Knocks, and working hard by staying the course and keeping the faith through every challenge that comes our way.

You may have heard it said of someone that “He was born to play baseball” or “She was born to sing.” What we mean by such expressions is these extraordinary people have found the place in life for which they belong.

When you received Christ as your personal Savior you were “reborn for spiritual maturity.” Everything you need for spiritual excellence resides in you and God wants to help you reach your great potential. Don’t give up on that sin you’ve been trying to overcome. Don’t give up on that spiritual discipline you’ve been trying to master. God wants to take you from where you are right now to grow you into the spiritually mature Christian, He has created you to be. His “everything you need” promise is backed by “His divine power.”

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” Go for it.
