“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
My youngest son was the first in the family to get a GPS Navigator. So when Janet and I were planning a trip to our home state of Virginia, I asked if I could borrow it. Mind you, I knew the way home having made the drive from Alabama numerous times before. I suppose I’m a sucker for a gadget.
While driving through Knoxville, we encountered a detour, which took us off the interstate and into unfamiliar territory; the perfect opportunity to put the GPS Navigator to the test. No need to stop for directions, because the nice little lady inside the navigator was an expert.
Still believing she was the authority on the subject, we followed her instructions. And then she told us to turn around again — and again.
It didn’t take long for us to conclude we were lost, going in circles, and seriously misguided by a gadget. So we took matters in hand. Stopped at a gas station to ask for directions.
“Don’t know. I haven’t lived here long. This detour has me confused too,” responded the store clerk. “We sell maps.”
Map in hand, we charted our course, returned to the highway, and successfully arrived at our destination.
In today’s selected scripture, Jesus declares He is “the way.” As we travel through the complexities of life, we have access to an onboard navigator who will give us the vital direction we need. Getting on the right path and staying there is vital to peace of mind and well-being.
It’s significant that Jesus also says that He is “the truth.” There are many ways — but only one right way. There are paths that lead to destruction, roads that bring about pain and suffering, and highways that divert us from the abundant life that God has for us. His way is the true way.
Even when you follow in the way of God’s truth you will still encounter obstacles, detours, difficult conditions, and unfortunate mishaps. Such is part of the human experience on this earth. But you can always have the confidence you are headed in a direction that has been charted by the God who loves you. He’ll either give you what you need to make it through the storm or take you out of it. His way is completely trustworthy. His word is pure truth — totally reliable.
Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life.” His way affects the totality of our being, life now and life forever.
His way is the only way to God. There are many approaches to spirituality, and most lay claim to a way to a god, gods, or God. But there is only one true way to the true, one and only God. Jesus declared, “No one comes to the Father except through me.” You cannot by-pass Jesus to get to God.
What are you relying upon for direction in your life? Are you just winging it, seldom asking for directions? Are you lost and aimlessly wandering on a road that leads to nowhere? Turn your life in the right direction today. Follow God’s perfectly designed course for your life by following Jesus, “the way, the truth, and the life.”
